Spending one day with Moto z3 play? The good, The bad !

Spending one day with Moto z3 play

As said in my previous post, I have purchased a Moto z3 play in the process of finding my new daily driver. I have used it well on the very first day. To start of with unboxing and experience, I have bought the phone for $437.00 USD including taxes after a $100 discount by Motorola.

The phone had the below contents inside the box, the packing was decent and good enough to safeguard the phone and its contents. Box consisted,
  • moto Z3 play
  • USB Type-C cable
  • Turbocharger Wall brick 15W
  • moto mod - Battery pack
  • 3.5 mm to USB Type C dongle
  • User manuals

Physical:

Just like most of current smartphones,  moto z3 play has joined them by removing the headphone jack. The power button has been moved onto left which is a little odd, it has been switched places with volume buttons. Finger print sensor has been on the sides which is a good part. That could have been made a power button too just like razer phone. Motorola claims users can press it repeatedly  and it can lock the screen as it is exactly at the thumb position. But, most of the users raised an issue to at least give that as an option to configure which is a decent ask. Phone is very light and carries no weight. Another small concern is it being very slippery. Attaching the moto mod which comes with the box makes it good handy phone and provides some added grip.

Hardware:

It has got a Snapdragon 636 processor which is okay but most of the same price line phones are equipped with Snapdragon 835 or +. It has the most interesting feature of moto mods. Back of the phone it got magnet strips which allows to attach moto mods and maximize the capacity of the phone in any given direction.

Software:

As every Motorola phone the OS is maintained to have very less bloatware with some Motorola added apps like gestures and their own mod store. I had a clean experience of Android which I always prefer. The software on this phone is fast and decent just like any flagship phone. All the Google apps are being changed to Pixel font and I personally wish I can have the same font through out the phone. It is also equipped with Google Assistant so Google AI and nothing else to tell new about it.

First Impressions:

As always, I installed all my daily driving apps including my office apps. Critical one's are PubG gaming app and facebook which were bagging most of the memory on my phone. I personally use Google Photos for all the pics which I capture across any device so I had to sync that too. I liked the phone and really want to continue using it. But, there are few complains which I had after good one day of use.
  1. Firstly, power button. I badly want that to configurable by software to enable it to fingerprint sensor. My finger always goes to volume button and I end up decreasing volume instead of locking my screen.
  2. Finger print sensor can be placed a little higher position as it is exactly at the place where any individual can carry the phone and it unlocks the screen. I have to carry it with 3 fingers to not let it unlock the screen unnecessarily.
  3. Camera is not at all to the mark of $500 phone. It could have been lot better. I quickly snap pics using Whatsapp and send them in groups. On this phone I can surely say it is impossible to do that. Each and every pic I capture using the whatsapp camera are blurry. I once tried to hold the  phone as firmly as possible and still it was a blurry picture.
  4. Flash light is Yellow LED which I personally didn't like.
  5. Android P is already announced about 5 months ago and most of the competitors and Eastern manufacturers like Oneplus. Xiaomi have already issued updates to their models. Motorola despite having very less bloatware cannot manage to provide faster updates to the users.
  6. Wifi reception is a little less when compared to my previous phone Iphone X. I can play PubG game flawlessly with a very weak WiFi connection, where as moto Z3 play lags a lot in this time.
  7. There is only one front facing speaker and it is very less audible when compared to most of the today's phones. This may be one try from Motorola to force users to buy a speaker mod.

Fin:

I am not going to return this phone for sure. I am excited about trying different mods and I already started liking the free battery mod which was given with the box. It adds about 1 more full battery life to the phone. It also doesn't add much weight to the phone. I have already switched off my Apple iPhone X and packed it back in the box. So, Yes I found my daily driver and will soon post with much more updates on my moto mods experience.

Heads up: I wanted to try gamepad moto mod on the phone or Insta share projector. Please do follow for more updates on my next post.
